5 steps to a purposeful safety policy

All good safety programs start with a policy that defines your company safety program for the year.

Safety can foster a community amongst your team if presented in the correct way.

5 steps to a purposeful safety policy

  1. Make a statement defining your companies attitude regarding safety. Keep the statement to 1-2 sentences.

  2. Define a yearly goal. Provide quarterly metrics to achieve the defined goal.

  3. Define employer and employee responsibilities. Use bullet points and short statements.

  4. Don’t put the policy away and forget about it! Educate all employees on the policy once the policy is executed, review the benchmarks quarterly at all hands and department meetings. Ask for feedback in various ways including anonymously. Complete all employer responsibilities in a timely manner. Review the policy and define a new goal annually.

  5. Use positive language when training and reviewing.
